School and the OCF Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) are back in session this month! We wanted to catch up with a former YAC member to see what she is doing and how being a part of this impactful organization shaped her life. Thank you, Emily, for sharing with us!
Name: Emily Szczerowski
Year Graduated and High School: Gaylord High School 2015
Post-secondary School: Michigan State University Class of 2019
Where do you live now and what are you doing?
I currently live in Gaylord, MI with my husband Vinny. We both work remotely; I work for a non-profit based out of Lansing called Michigan Conservative Energy Forum. We believe in an “all of the above” approach to energy and are the right leaning voice across the state regarding energy issues.
What was your favorite part about YAC or a great memory?
I loved getting to know other students that I wouldn’t have necessarily connected with otherwise. We always played fun games/icebreakers to open up each meeting. Butt letters anyone? Haha
What skills did YAC teach you that you apply to your current work life?
YAC taught me a little bit about how to do it all! Working for a non-profit now I wear many hats, and the core of that started through YAC.
What advice would you give current YAC members?
Take in all of the experiences presented to you and don’t be afraid of networking. You never know who you will meet or the memories you’ll make.
How are you involved with philanthropy now?
I continue to support the OCF and YAC whenever I can, amongst many other foundations and nonprofits. I regularly attend Extreevaganza, and as a college student at MSU I was an advisor to the Capitol Area Foundation’s YAC program.
